I wrote Burn during the writing process for Grief Counseling, but I felt it was too strong of a song to not go all out on. I knew the moment I wrote it that I would want a music video, and the circumstances at the time made it impossible for me to do a video I could be proud of. I made the decision to hold off on Burn, and when it came time to start writing for ‘Go Out in Gold’, I knew that Burn was going to be the track that really kicks the record into high gear.
The song itself is a departure from the lyrical content of my last album - when thinking about what I wanted to say, I kept thinking of everything that tried to stop me from getting to where I’m at today. There will always be people in your life that may not have your best interests at heart, and sometimes, they’ll even hope to see you fail. Burn is my response to that; a song that exists despite the hurdles it took to get here.
I always reach a point after a major release that I doubt myself and my abilities. I’m always thinking “I’ve peaked”, and having Burn exist at a time when I needed it most has kept me motivated to push Everender to be the best project it can be. I’m incredibly proud of it, and I hope you dig it as much as I do.
lyrics
Lyrics:
Over and over and over, the comeback
Telling myself in a moment I lost
That part of me I used to cling to
Losing myself in the stories
You couldn’t be bothered to read
You’d never really get it
It was always for me
I sing alone to myself when it all goes wrong
I know you do the same, with your own song
You wanna see me burn, so strike that matchstick
Make me feel something
‘Cause I’ve been burning at both ends
Steady in the face of all your judgment
And how I hope to god it was worth it
To watch me burn, ‘cause I’m no stranger to the flame
Is it real or not? Is it all I’ve got
To feel right at home in this weather?
Do you feel it too?
Are you starting to lose your cool
Before it gets better?
Talk to myself as I pace when it all goes wrong
A world away, but I know you’re gone
You wanna see me burn, so strike that matchstick
Make me feel something
‘Cause I’ve been burning at both ends
Steady in the face of all your judgment
And how I hope to god it was worth it
To watch me burn, ‘cause I’m no stranger to the flame
Pulled through the dirt
Like you drug my name
You’re no god; you’re no saint
We are not the same
You wanna see me burn
You wanna see me burn
You wanna see me burn
But I’m no stranger to the flame
You wanna see me burn, so strike that matchstick
Make me feel something
Cause I’ve been burned alive
Burning all my life
Steady in the face of all your judgment
And how I hope to god it was worth it
To watch me burn, and build a home inside the flames
You wanna watch me burn
You wanna watch me burn
Like the blood in my veins
You wanna watch me burn
You wanna watch me burn
Find a home in the flames
